"Maelstrom" tells the story of Bibi Champagne (Marie-Josee Croze), a rich, beautiful boutique owner in Montreal whom we meet while she's on the operating table. One moment the audience is witnessing something as shocking as an abortion, staged with graphic verisimilitude the next it's being addressed by an antediluvian sea creature about the meaning of life. Observant intelligence constantly vies with pretension - and sometimes plain wacky implausibility - throughout "Maelstrom," by Canadian writer-director Denis Villeneuve. There are moments in "Maelstrom" that so acutely capture the inner life of a young, contemporary woman that viewers may be tempted to compare it to such like-minded films as "Ruby in Paradise" and "Repulsion." ![]()
